7 Ways to Refresh Your Space on a Budget

With the start of the New Year, it’s always refreshing to organize your space and give your home a new look. Since the Christmas decor is put away and you’re ready for a little change up in your space, here’s 7 ways you can refresh your space on a budget:

1. Clear the Clutter

Before redecorating or rearranging your space, it’s good to go through what you already have and give away or throw out what you don’t need anymore. This allows you to have a clean start and find decor that you might have forgotten about if it was stuffed in the back of your closet.

2. Shop Your Own Home

Once you’ve purged the things you don’t need and never use, shop your own home to find artwork, decor, or pillows that could be used in a new way or different room. For our wedding, I made various signs and used greenery and other decor to decorate the space and I now use this decor in our apartment. I didn’t have to buy more stuff, but because I simply use it for a different purpose, it feels like a new item.

3. Make A List

After collecting items throughout your house that you want to use in a new way, think about a couple items you would like buy to refresh your space. It helps to have an idea of what you would like to buy and how much you’re willing to spend, rather than going into the store with no idea. It’s easy to fall into the habit of buying items that don’t fit in your space, aren’t the style of your home, or that you don’t really need. Going to the store with a simple list of a few small decor items and one or two bigger items you would like helps to keep the budget on track.

4. Plan Out Where to Go

Some of the places we love to go to for simple decor items and larger pieces include:

  • Goodwill
  • TJ Maxx
  • HomeGoods
  • Target

Depending on the location and season, Goodwill can have some great items like mirrors, frames, and clocks. If you’re willing to put some work into furniture, you can usually get it cheaper and then fix it up with spray paint or sanding & stain. TJ Maxx and HomeGoods are great for decorative pillows, candles, little decor items, and artwork because things are always at a discount. We like Target’s dollar section because there’s seasonal decor and smaller items that range $1 – $5, which is great for styling shelves or creating gallery walls. It’s also a great place for bigger items because Target has a lot of options and you can find quality pieces.

5. Add Small Decor

Here are some decor items that typically aren’t very expensive, but make a difference in making your space feel refreshed:

  • small potted plants
  • candles
  • simple black or white frames
  • small decorative pillows
  • cozy throw blankets
  • table lamps or string lights

6. Buy a Bigger Item

With a refresh, you may want one or two items that make a bigger punch and help the space feel more updated. For these items, think more quality over quantity because you’ll probably keep these items longer and won’t change them season to season.

Some bigger items that help with a refresh include:

  • large wall clocks
  • floor lamps
  • coffee tables
  • accent chairs

7. Decorate & Change it Up

After you’ve cleared the clutter, shopped your own home, made a list to go shopping, and found some new items you want to bring into your space, it’s time to get to work. I love to gather all of the items from my home and the new items I’ve purchased and lay it out on the floor. That way I know what I’m working with and can make a game plan of what is going where. Think outside the box to use decor in different places than you have before and switch things around. Make a gallery wall with various picture frames, add some throw pillows to your couch, or use everyday items on display.

After an hour or two of moving things around, bringing in your new items, and switching up the decor on your walls, it will feel like a new space. Simple updates and small changes can really make a difference in making your home feel more like your style and help keep things fresh.
